At the Vegreville Community Council Meeting on February 26, 2007 people talked about the following business:
Housing Issues and Possible Solutions
Some of the problems people have with housing are:
- Need lower rental costs for houses and apartments. For example $275/ $385 - $575 for apartments and $750 and up for houses.
- Not enough houses to rent or buy.
- Families get separated because there is not enough space.
- People live with roommates because they cannot afford to live alone.
- Not enough money left after the rent to buy groceries.
- Some landlords are not taking care of the houses. They are falling apart. For example no heat, unfair treatment and security concerns.
- Landlords do not listen and keep raising rent due to the economy.
Some of the solutions people arrived at were;
- Get community going in Vegreville for the Affordable Housing Program.
- Raise AISH amount.
- Invite Mr. Stelmach to a meeting to discuss issues.
- Government Task Force meeting in different communities.
- Build more houses and apartments.
- Get together with other self advocate groups.
- Invite St. Paul and Bonnyville communities who were successful in getting money for housing to a meeting.
