At the Vegreville Community Council Meeting on February 26, 2007 people talked about the following business:

Housing Issues and Possible Solutions

Some of the problems people have with housing are:

  • Need lower rental costs for houses and apartments. For example $275/ $385 - $575 for apartments and $750 and up for houses.
  • Not enough houses to rent or buy.
  • Families get separated because there is not enough space.
  • People live with roommates because they cannot afford to live alone.
  • Not enough money left after the rent to buy groceries.
  • Some landlords are not taking care of the houses. They are falling apart. For example no heat, unfair treatment and security concerns.
  • Landlords do not listen and keep raising rent due to the economy.

Some of the solutions people arrived at were;

  • Get community going in Vegreville for the Affordable Housing Program.
  • Raise AISH amount.
  • Invite Mr. Stelmach to a meeting to discuss issues.
  • Government Task Force meeting in different communities.
  • Build more houses and apartments.
  • Get together with other self advocate groups.
  • Invite St. Paul and Bonnyville communities who were successful in getting money for housing to a meeting.

Next Meeting

The next meeting is March 26, 2007 at 7:00 pm.
